My Take on Bulletproof Coffee and the Lower Calorie Version I Drink Instead

One of the questions I’ve been getting from clients lately is about my take on Bulletproof Coffee.
If you’ve never heard of it, you’re probably not doing a keto diet or following the growing legions of biohackers and biohacker-hopefuls.  If you’ve somehow missed the trend, Bulletproof is a brand of products that the owner, a wealthy Silicon Valley entrepreneur and self-proclaimed biohacker, is making big bank on. Bulletproof coffee is a blended concoction of grass-fed ghee butter, Brain Octane (their brand of MCT oil), and their brand of coffee beans which supposedly has less “mycotoxins” (mold) than other coffee brands.  Sounds scary – mold on coffee – but it happens when beans are stored and once it’s roasted and brewed any dangerous amounts are killed.
I admit I have an issue with paying that much money for branded coffee beans and MCT oil.  I gave up my daily Coffee Bean latte habit many years ago when I realized how much I was spending a month.  But I also have an issue with drinking a cup of coffee that has as many calories and cheeseburger!
There also isn’t any real science to back up the founder’s claims that it will help you turn into a fat burning machine either. Coffee alone is a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant associated with longer life spans and helping burn fat without any other ingredients.
Plus, adding ghee butter to a hot brew is nothing new. Tibetans and people who live around Himalayas have been adding yak butter to their tea for-almost-ever.
I can understand why people on a #ketogenic diet swear by the stuff. But if you’re not in keto, there is simply no need to drink coffee that is well over 400 calories a serving. Even then, 400+ calories for coffee seems needless.
HOWEVER, I do love the boost my brain and body gets from the MCT oil (a medium chain triglyceride from coconut oil that crosses the blood brain barrier and does not need to be broken down by the liver for the body to use). So for my early morning workouts I have concocted my own brand of bullet proof coffee. See my recipe below…. it has less than half the calories.
Sorry 😐 to all the #bulletproofcoffee purists out there, but I had to come up with my own version that is also dairy free:

My version of bulletproof coffee for the calorie conscious drinker

I’ll call this #Bulletproof LITE coffee:
• French roast coffee
• 1/4 c of vanilla non sweetened almond milk
• splash of organic coconut or soy creamer
• 1 – 2 tsp coconut 🥥 oil
• 1 – 2 tsp of MCT oil
Blend until frothy and add cinnamon.
Low calorie, full of energy⚡️⚡️ and dairy free 🐮!
