12-Minute Battle Rope Circuit

12-Minute Battle Rope Circuit

When the weather forces me indoors for my Saturday workout, I want to get it over with faster.  I need a bare minimum of one day a week to workout outside.  The fresh air has an incredibly positive effect on my mindset and helps me decompress.  I used to train outdoors several days a week when I was rowing, outrigging or mountain bike riding, but my work schedule changed years ago and that was the end of that.  But I managed to keep a chunk of time open on Saturdays for myself....  it's my mental health day as much as my physical health day. But even in sunny L.A., we get a few rain storms.  We need more of course because of the drought, so I'm not complaining.  So I had to come up with an alternative on this particular Saturday that would give a full body workout in minimal time. I went to the latest Equinox gym to open so I could check out the new gear.  Since Rope Slams are often part of my Saturday outdoor workout (I keep a rope in my trunk), I headed straight for their brand new one which is conveniently located next to a rack of kettlebells.   It was the perfect set up for this workout.   This is a simple 12-minute circuit where every other exercise is some kind of rope slam. Perform :50 seconds of work with :10 seconds of rest between exercises for 12 minutes. That’s a lot of rope time.  If that’s too much rope work, you can make all the intervals shorter (i.e. :30 seconds) or,...
Six Moves to a Sexy Summer Body (for a tighter tummy and sculpted arms!)

Six Moves to a Sexy Summer Body (for a tighter tummy and sculpted arms!)

https://vimeo.com/221152307 This is not a beginner workout, but it can be great for either intermediate level exercisers all the way thru advanced fitness levels.  I'm a huge proponent for doing at least 1 workout a week outside where you can GET AWAY from the mirrors, the piped in music, the sweaty equipment and most of all, get away from the self-judgement and comparison to others! For this workout, all you need is enough room to move side to side about 10 feet or more. No Judgement and No Comparison Zone: Some people thrive on physical competition.  Most people don't.  It's more of a slap in the face for many.  When you use my workout templates all under the workout->videos tab, I truly hope hope you do them in a space that relaxes you and gives you enjoyment.   Not in a gym with you watching what others are doing and subconsciously wondering if they are judging you back. You'll see most of mine are at my favorite park in L.A.  It's one of my "happy spaces."  I can pretty much guarantee that the mood you will be in after one of my outdoor workouts will far exceed a workout you do in your bedroom or living room following along to a full length workout video.   Put on your headphones, go thru each of the exercises with me to get the muscle memory, then take it on your own!    ...
Short Workouts I swear By

Short Workouts I swear By

It’s just common sense that if you’re short on time, a 20-minute workout is better than nothing. You can take a run, or hop on a cardio machine, maybe even do some calisthenics or a quick circuit of weights. But it might be surprising to you if I said it’s possible to get a better workout in 20 minutes than in an hour. If you really want to maximize your time and get the benefits of a full length workout in the half the time or less, then I’ve got the workouts for you! Meet the TRX (or a similar suspension training device) and kettlebells. They’re not for timid exercisers who don’t want their mascara to run or to feel sore or, heaven forbid, get a callus. However, they’re both completely modifiable for any level of fitness - you gotta start somewhere. But of course, as with all forms of exercise, not everything is going to be appropriate for everyone. Kettlebell and suspension training workouts (such as the TRX) are nothing new, but they’re not mainstream yet. The TRX, invented by an entrepreneurial former Navy Seal, is the most widely-marketed brand of suspension trainer. More and more gyms are offering group classes in this type of training and it is gradually gaining popularity amongst personal trainers. Suspension training works by using the resistance of your own body weight and gravity. By changing the length of the adjustable heavy duty, nylon webbing straps and the angle of your body, you can create more or less resistance for dozens of exercises that will strengthen your entire body, improve your balance, flexibility...
20 Minute Workout with Tabata Super Sets (Cuz they’re more fun that way!)

20 Minute Workout with Tabata Super Sets (Cuz they’re more fun that way!)

Tabata Super Sets?  Got 20 Minutes?  This can be better than a 45-minute workout! If you give this 20-minute workout your all, and it will be better than a 45 minute half-assed or comfort zone endurance workout.  I'm doing Tabatas, but as a super set.   That means instead of doing all 8 rounds of Tabata with the same exercise, I'm alternating between 2. In this video I give you 5 great exercises to alternate between for a short, semi-sweet, intense workout you can do almost anywhere!  I do most of these outside and bring my own portable gear. Exercise swap out: Biceps:  If you don't have dumbbells, use resistance bands. Triceps:  If you don't have a Lebert, use dumbbells for overhead presses or a chair / bench for dips. Back:  If you don't have a Lebert Equalizers for rows, use dumbbells for bent over rows or resistance bands criss crossed around your feet for seated rows or bent over rows. Dead lifts:  No sandbell?  No prob.  Use a heavy medicine ball, kettlebells or dumbbells.  Or do jump...
