I’ve dabbled with them before but wasn’t quite sure what real benefits these machines could provide and if, over the long run they were safe. Now that these machines are more prevalent in gyms and fitness studios as well as used by elite athletes, more research is available and the findings look darn good especially f your fitness goals are speed, power, flexibility or strengthening lower body joints. One more interesting tidbit from Real Age. I’m a big fan of 3 bean salad. I can eat it everyday and often do. And my favorite part of Mexican food are the beans. So of course I was thrilled to read this new study that suggests eating the same number of calories in beans vs. meat can lead to less weight gain.

A great tip I read on Real Age. It comes from Brian Wansink, a researcher at Cornell who I’m a huge fan of and mildly obsessed with (not in a weird way – professionally!). HIIT Training – For better performance and a better looking body
This recent article in the LA Times hits on what we’re doing this and every Spring in my Spinning / Cycling classes – HIIT Training (High Intensity Interval Training). A study from ’09 shows it’s amazing benefits on improving your speed and power in pretty much any sport or fitness activity. Intervals, every time they’re studied always prove to have some impressive results, and best of all, get you out of the gym faster since the workouts are effective even when they’re short!
