Refreshing Summer-Inspired Smoothie Roundup

Refreshing Summer-Inspired Smoothie Roundup

There’s no easier, better or, more fun way to whip up a refreshing breakfast, snack or meal-replacement than a filling, nutrient-dense smoothie!

I make them much more often in the summer than the winter.  Now that we’re midway through summer, I want to share some of my best summer-inspired smoothie and the secret weapons that make them powerful.

My Secret Weapons

I always use some kind of protein powder usually with a green or red superfood powder.  I use the superfood powder  instead of a multivitamin.

If you want your smoothie to satiate you for a few hours, because you’re drinking it instead of a meal, protein is they key for satisfying your cravings.

I’ve been asked many times what the best type of protein powder is and, which kind is my favorite.  I’ve used every kind from egg to plant proteins.  I have favorites in each category, I keep coming back to whey protein for a few reasons:

  1. Whey protein provides an excellent range of essential amino acids which are absorbed quickly
  2. It’s one of the best researched supplements in the world so we know it works
  3. Even though I have lactose intolerance, I have no noticeable symptoms from it

If you’re not exactly sure what whey is other than something Little Miss Muffet ate on her tuffet, whey protein is the liquid part of milk that separates during cheese production.

Lately I’ve been using WheyPro80 Vanilla Cake Batter flavor which works wonderfully in all the recipes below and even muffins!  It has 120 calories, 24g of protein, only 2g of carbs and 1.5g of sugar.

Whatever brand you decide to go with, be sure you check that the sugar is extremely low.  And, look for a protein content of around 20g, especially if  you’re using it as a meal replacement or a post workout recovery drink.

Another secret weapon to many of my delicious smoothies are a heaping tablespoon of Macro Greens or Miracle Reds.

These great tasting powders gives me a high dose of free-radical-ass-kicking antioxidants and probiotics to help with digestion with probiotics

My newest obsession is adding collagen hydrolysate to my smoothies because…. wrinkles!

As we age, collagen production rapidly declines causing saggy, loose, wrinkly skin.  UGH. Another bummer from losing collagen is stiffer, achier joints.

While there isn’t a lot of research on supplementing with collagen yet, the few studies done so far have convinced me to try it.  There’s nothing to lose but wrinkles and stiff joints!  Here’s what the research says:

•  A study on women showed collagen supplementation may help improve skin elasticity.

•  A study on osteoarthritis sufferers over 70-days showed collagen can work as a nice joint lubricant.  The study participants reported a significant reduction in pain.

•  And, another study showed it helped elderly men buff up and get stronger when taken in combination with pumping iron.

I’ve been using the Great Lakes brand lately.  It adds another 11g of protein to your smoothie and blends well… it’s gelatin after all.

BlendTec refurbished blender

Refurbished BledTec Blender

I blend EVERYTHING in a BlendTec Blender.

By far the best value are the refurbished ones.

This is the one I bought.

There are more expensive blenders on the market, but none have a leg up on this baby.  And it does beat the pants off my Bullet blender.

Now let’s get to the smoothies!

 1. The Crap Shoot

I call this protein & collagen boosted smoothie, “the Crap Shoot” cuz I had noooo idea if it would work. I really was surprised at how delicious it was!  This may be the best one I’ve ever made.

2.  Tropical Green Dream Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup of chopped mango
  • 1 nectarine, sliced
  • 1 cup of kale

4. Blueberry Tropical Flaxseed Smoothie

As I mentioned, I’m always dreaming of a tropical island.  So you can always find plenty of tropical fruits in my freezer.  This one has a sweet and nutty flavor, plus a dose of healthy fats courtesy of the flaxseeds.

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup of frozen pineapple tidbits
  • 1/2 cup frozen mangos
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 – 2 Tbsp toasted flax seeds (for a nutty/ fruity taste with healthy fat)
  • 1 – 1.5 cups vanilla almond milk
  • 1 scoop Whey Pro 89 Vanilla Cake Batter protein powder
blueberry, banana, tropical fruit and flaxseed smoothie

5.  Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie

This recipe comes from the Taste of Home website.  It’s so summery, I had to add it to the list.  Lemon yogurt makes it creamy.  I use both yogurt and a scoop of vanilla protein powder to make it extra filling, but I cut the yogurt to half as much.

Taste of Home – Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie

  • 2 cups lemonade
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) lemon yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups frozen unsweetened strawberries
  • Add vanilla protein powder (optional).  You can use this instead of the vanilla extract and yogurt, or use a little less yogurt.

For an extra health boost, add the Miracle Reds powder too.

6. Melon-Mango “Melango??”

anti aging smoothie

Melon-Mango aka the “Melango” Smoothie

Because I love my melons in the summer!  Packed with beta-carotene (more than carrots!) and Vitamin C needed for collagen production, this smoothie is sweet enough for dessert.

  • 1 cup chopped Tuscan melon,
  • 1/2 – 1 cup chopped mango,
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 – 1.5 cups almond or cashew milk
  • Vanilla Cake Batter Whey Pro 80 protein
  • And, to spark that vitamin C into action, add some optional collagen powder.

Let me know which is your favorite!
